"When 11-year old Melissa gets home from school, she calls her mom at work,=
=20
grabs a snack, and jumps online. If anyone asks, she says she's doing=20
homework, but most of the time she's sending Instant Messages to friends=
from=20
school. Today, however, she reads a lengthy e-mail from a 12 year old girl,=
a=20
new penpal she found at her favorite Web site. Melissa writes back,=20
describing the cheerleading tryout she went to after school and complaining=
=20
about how she has to get dinner started because her parents are getting home=
=20
late. Within minutes she has a reply from her new friend commiserating about=
=20
how unreasonable parents can be.
"What Melissa doesn't know is that she's being groomed by a sexual predator=
-=20
a man who may take weeks, or even months to learn about her habits and=20
vulnerabilities. Her naivet=E9 is part of what attracted this man to her. He=
=20
knows that if he proceeds carefully, Melissa will be drawn into a=20
relationship she would never even consider in real life. She won't divulge=
=20
her name or address - her parents are strict about that rule - but she won't=
=20
need to. The predator will soon learn what school she attends and whether=
she=20
made the cheerleading team. He'll know her favorite stores at the mall and=
=20
the name of a teacher who gives too much homework. He may even introduce her=
=20
to an older man - himself with a different screen name - who can help her=20
with a project she's doing for school. That man may offer to take her and=
her=20
online penpal to a concert or a movie. Throughout it all, Melissa may remain=
=20
utterly unaware of how she's being manipulated."

The above was excerpted from an article titled "Sex, Lies, and Children:=
What=20
Parents Don't Know About the Internet." To find out more about how to=20
protect your children and your students, pick up the March issue of=

Wow! Great resource for high school and college teachers, from Purdue
University. It has everything from conventions to the actual content of
writing a research report. If I ever have to do another one, I want this
page!

This is part of the National Endowment of the Humanities. They are
collecting family stories, and you can add yours, or your students could
add theirs. You can also read what others have already written.
